2021 seemed as if it would never end, yet here we are knee deep in 2022. Many of this year’s trends are extensions of trends we saw last year, with a focus on healthier choices from pub grub to lower alcohol content in drinks. Here are the top six:

1. Supply Chain Disruptions Require Fast Thinking

With disruptions affecting everything in the bar from food to straws, one thing bar managers should keep in mind is that eventually, even your beverage choices will be affected. Rather than simply take a cocktail off the menu, consider replacing the staples with local and readily available alternatives to imports.

2. More People are Going Gluten-Free and Vegan

The days of pretzels on the bar and burgers on the grill may be nearing an end. With more and more people opting for healthier food choices, you may need to rethink your menu and snack options in 2022. Take a look at providing gluten free options on your menu, along with vegan burgers and healthier snacks.

3. Mind Your ABV’s

2021 saw a real pivot to lower alcohol cocktail and beer choices, and this trend will continue and strengthen throughout 2022. Bar managers would be wise to list the alcohol content next to each beer or cocktail to cater to a new generation of “smart” drinkers.

4. Cocktails to Go: Canned and Ready-Mixed Cocktail Options

In response to a population unable to drink their favorites at their local bars, savvy owners and producers have stepped up the “cocktails to go” game. From an increase in growlers to canned favorites, look for this 2022 bar trend to continue and expand as the pandemic continues its uncertain grip on your patrons.

5. Masks for All

COVID is still upon us even two years later, and people continue to be reluctant to hang out in places they once loved. Smart bar owners will encourage patrons and staff alike to continue to wear masks, and provide hand sanitizer to keep customers protected. It may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s a necessity in today’s COVID-wary environment.

6. Back to the Future

Patrons are returning to simpler, retro cocktails such as Cosmos, to be consumed in themed venues like speakeasies. This bar trend is a simplistic time travel brought on by many TV shows and movies. The reboot of Sex and the City, for instance, drove a 204% increase in searches for Cosmopolitans. On one hand, look to the future for drinks and bar technologies shaping the industry, but on the other hand, don’t be afraid to revisit some classic cocktails for these nostalgic patrons.
